HISTORY
The Renegades HS Rugby Club was founded as the Downers Grove Renegades High School Rugby Club in 2004. The first group of 19 players who started the club were from Downers Grove North & South High Schools and they selected the Renegade name.
These players began training in early March of that year with not one of them having ever played a game of rugby. Under the guidance of coaches Ken Westergaard and Brian Whalen the team learned how to play and made steady improvement throughout the season. On Memorial Day with only one available substitute player, the team beat
Rockford 27-7 to claim the Tier II State Championship. The Renegades finished their first year with a perfect 10-0 record.
In 2005 the club had 4 players returning along with Coach Ken and a new coach, Dave Paull. They began the season 4-0 before suffering their first loss by a 17-12 margin to the Chicago Blues. A week later they again lost by a 15-12 score to the Blaze Youth. But in the play-offs they were able to pay back both of those clubs. After a narrow 1st Round 7-3 win over Morton they pulled together and beat the Blaze Youth 21-7. In the Championship Game, a last second score secured the Tier II State Championship with a 19-15 win over the Chicago Blues. On the year the Renegades were 4-2 during the league seasona nd overall won 7 of their 9 matches.
For the 2006 season the Renegades returned 7 experienced players and had high hopes for another successful year. The club played well from the start of the season, rarely being challenged except for the Morton game where the Renegades prevailed 17-15. After finishing the regular season 6-0 they dispatched Hersey before facing Morton again for the right to play for the State Championship. The Renegades were down 3-0 for most of the match before scoring twice in the last 10 minutes to win 14-3. This earned them the right to play Montini. After falling behind 12-0 the Renegades tied the match at half time and came out on top by a 27-12 score to win their 3rd straight Tier II State Championship.
In 2007 the Renegades were elevated into Tier 1, the higher level of play in the IYRA. Coach Matt Bando joined holdover coaches Ken and Dave. Their first match ended up in a 5-5 tie with Naperville. When they won their second match with a 19-12 victory at Brother Rice who were the defending Tier 1 State Champs, the league took notice. The only loss during the regular schedule was 18-7 at St. Charles (who would win the 2007 Championship) and the 4-1-1 record earned the #4 seed in the play-offs. Hosting Mount Carmel, the Renegades were down 19-5 at the half. Getting back to playing as they had all year the Renegades went ahead 26-24 with four minutes to play. But a great run by a MC player won the game with under a minute left in the match, final score 31-26 and a final record of 4-2-1.
With a young side for the 2008 season the club experienced some growing pains. The club gained a new coach in Tom Kostka which helped a lot when Coach Ken became unavailable for the season. After an opening 1 point loss to Plainfield (13-12) the Renegades lost to Naperville. Showing their spirit they came back the next week with a 36-24 win over Glen Ellyn. The Renengades played tough against veteran clubs, St. Ignatius and St. Charles (2008 Champions), earning respect, but not victories. This earned a play-off match against Lincoln Way, #1 in the East Division. Utilizing an excellent pod style attack, Lincoln Way eliminated the Renegades by a 31-0 margin and an overall 1-5 record for the season.
2009 saw an influx of new players. The club grew to over 30 players for the first time in the 6 year history. The club played very well at times as the many new players learned the intricities of the game. The club showed it's character in coming back after a tough loss at Naperville to win close, hard fought matches against St. Charles and the Mustangs of Morton H.S. The team suffered a few key injuries along the way but still ended the leage season with a 4-1 record and the second seed for the Tier 1 Western Division. The Renegades defeated Mount Carmel 24-17 in the opening round of the play-offs for their first ever Tier 1 play-off victory. The semi-final loss against Brother Rice was closer than the 17-7 score indicated. (Brother Rice would go on to beat Naperville in the Championship match.) In the 3rd Place game the Mustangs won 15-5 to gain their first ever win agaisnt the Renegades. The overall record of 6-3 was the reward for a very satisfying season.
For 2010 the club moved back to Tier 2 due to a lack of experienced players returning. It turned out to be a season of close calls and injuries. The club had the usual addition of seniors and a few younger players as well. The forwards, though mobile and enthusiastic were a bit smaller and sometimes over matched physically against some clubs. There were moments of great play where the team put everything together, and for the most part the club played well, but the injuries to key players cut into their ability to win ball consistently. Cody Long was lost in the preseason to a broken ankle. Adrian Nies, Mike Madden, Kevin Christman, Jack Blythe and captain Fred Tolin were also among the injured and missed playing time. Despite the efforts of the remaining players the club finished with a winless season, going 0-5-1 in the league and 0-6-1 overall. The tie came in a hard fought 13-13 match with Montini. The club did participate in Sevens tournaments after the season for the first time and had some encouraging success in these contests.
The 2011 season was a return to prominence for the Renegades. Dan Hart returned as a new coach and the club also received help from Al Klemp. The team was impressive in winning their first 3 matches but then suffered a defeat at St. Rita. The players learned from what was not a stellar effort and finished the season strong for a 5-1 league record. On the season they outscored the opposition by a 172-76 margin and earned the #4 seed in the Tier 2 play-offs. The first round opponent was Nequa Valley who the Renegades had barely beaten just 10 days previously. The rematch was another close contest with the Renegades coming out on top 26-17. The Semi-final was against unbeaten and Number 1 seed, Arlington Stallions. In a well played game the Renegades were victorious by a 20-17 margin. The Championship was a match was against the Number 2 seeded Sycamore club. Both teams with 7-1 records. Proof that they were evenly matched came when full time had the score knotted at 22 each. Sycamore scored the only try in the overtime period but the Renegades were knocking on the door for the last three minutes without success. After the 15's season, Jake Vizek organized a group of players that included some who played other spring sports and the team played in four 7's tournaments compiling an overall 10-4 record.
